So, AxVault.com has featured my guitar collection. How cool is that? I’m honored & proud to have been selected to be a featured collection! Of course, I dig anything that encourages me to buy more goofy guitars.
Check it out:

I used to think I wasn’t picky when it came to my guitar sound or tone. I thought I wanted a Les Paul through any old amp as long as it was cranked as loud as possible. I liked a switch to turn the dirt off or on. Maybe I thought it was cool or “punk rock” to not care about my sound.
Lately, I care about my tone. It doesn’t have to sound exactly the same all the time… but I have learned to roll the dials in the directions that make me happy.
Dunlop Cry Baby. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
I actually just sold a Jim Dunlop Cry-Baby on ebay because I didn’t like how it messed with the signal even when it was off. I may pick up some kind of wah that has a true bypass… but even at that I doubt I’ll use it much.
Any more, I don’t even use a foot-switch for going clean. I play dirty all the time. If I need to clean it up, I roll back one of those volume knobs, or use a switch on the guitar. I generally always play bridge pickup & that’s it.
I like tube amps. I have a Crate Power Block that sounds pretty good live, but like razorblades were taken to the speaker cones when recorded or miked in any way. I wince when I hear bands playing through solid state amps… especially when there are 2 guitars through the same kind of amp.
So, I generally go through this tiny Egnater Tweaker from my friend Dave that sounds huge, or Erin’s Blues Junior which gets incredibly dirty at reasonable volumes.
The biggest thing I’ve learned is to just listen. If I like the sound, others will too. What I think I want might not be exactly what I want. I’ve learned to trust my ears.
What’s your balance? What’s your sound?

The Classic 6
So, thanks to Guitar Squid, I saw a cool contest today from Rock Solid Guitar Stands. All I needed to do was get a picture of my axes, upload, and beg for votes. Simple enough, right?
Plus, any excuse to break out the guitars & take some photos is a good excuse. One of these days I’ll learn to take awesome photos, but for now these ones will work.
Guitar problem? What problem?

I thank you in advance, and I thank you multiple times (hopefully).
Here are the photos, that I took… Well, the best of the lot, anyway. I liked ‘em enough to share:
So please, vote. Tell your friends to vote. Vote daily. Did I mention I need your votes?

So, where do my favorite toys fall on this amusing scale from Gearpipe?
GearPipe.com | Trustworthiness of Guitars Scale
I do have to say… I don’t get why the Prince guitar is for repugnant individuals. I guess if you’re not Prince, it is a goofy axe to sling. I am glad that the boring Washburn/Jackson/Ibanez shape is all the way on the left though. I just can’t get behind them. I’m not sure why the oh-so-common Les Paul and Stratocaster shapes convey any level of trustworthiness of the player. Perhaps I’m over-thinking. This is quite amusing nonetheless.
Seriously though, I can’t find any of these…

GuitarSquid is awesome. Sometimes, I wonder if I have too many guitars (or if there is such a thing). Happily, all my answers quickly led to “Buy more guitars.”
GuitarSquid.com | Flow Chart: Do You Have Too Many Guitars?
It’s apparently as simple as this, my friends:
Got a wife? → Yes → How many pairs of shoes does she own? → 10+ → Buy more guitars.
I really do need an amp before another guitar though…

I have a problem with weird guitars. I’m drawn to them. I love the classic Les Paul shape and sound, but something about goofy-looking guitars really speaks to me. I’ve blogged before about my Galveston B.B. Stone, and drooled over the fanboy/kitsch factor of the Millennium Falcon guitar. Now, I’d like to blog about my most recent 6-string purchase… the Dewey Decibel FlipOut Guitar.
I was drawn to the goofiness when I saw it somewhere online. I even saw it hanging in Pittsburgh Guitars once, but I had no play money at the time, and couldn’t justify getting the thing.
I bought it through ebay a while ago, as my last band (Gasoline Dion) was kind of petering itself out of existence. I hadn’t really gotten the chance to use it on stage until recently. It always draws out a question or admiration. I don’t think I’ve drawn ire from anyone yet… except the expressed-yet-repressed hatred that my friend and guitar-guru Dave has toward just the general idea of the thing.

Yet despite his disdain for the abomination of an axe, Dave did help me install some GFS pickups to replace the stock ones… since I do like that beefier fat-Strat sound. They’re some great pickups for the price. Ernie and the Berts recently recorded a demo, and I’m quite happy with the tone coming from the guitar. I also like the feel of the frets. This has become my “it” guitar of the moment.
The weird thing about these guitars other than the backwards body is the color schemes and names. I oddly enough chose the “Lit Cigarette” color scheme. I wouldn’t mind a black pick-guard, but I don’t think you can walk into any guitar shop and just pick one up.
Fallout Shelter - Oct 30th, 2010
Obviously, I like the whimsical/goofy factor with this thing, and my “stage name” being ERiC AiXeLsyD, I felt that that backwards guitar should certainly fit that quite well.
I’m glad that Dewey Decibel makes this guitar, and I’m glad that I found one… or it found me. I’d love to see photos of other FlipOuts in action. I know they even have basses if you want some backwards bottom-end. They may just be prototypes, their web page hasn’t changed for quite some time… and as it last stands they’re available for pre-order, “to be filled in 2005.”
If you have one of these guitars, or know someone who does… post photos!
